When you see a platoon of youth in blue marching in our areas, these are Chrysalis students, experiencing the ‘Outdoor Phase’ of their 3 month training programme.
The Chrysalis Academy is the leading Academy for youth development in the Republic of South Africa, located at Porter Estate, Tokai. Their approach to human development is a holistic one whereby people are acknowledged at their spiritual, emotional, mental, physical and energetic levels in order to access the power within and release that deep-seated inner potential.
The programme includes a regimented and structured approach based on discipline, order and predictability in order to prepare students to manage their working and academic lives better.

The 3-month Residential Training is divided into four stages, which are compulsory for all students:
Orientation Phase consists of various life skills training such as personal hygiene, building self-esteem, inter-personal communication, cultural diversity, substance abuse, and leadership skills, amongst other things.
Outdoor Phase is aimed at building leadership capability and using the healing power of nature to overcome certain challenges; biodiversity and environmental awareness.
Skills Phase when students learn basic skills such as electrical circuitry, fire fighting, welding, cookery, youth development and a range of other skills depending on the students’ needs.
Community and Exit Phase is when the students engage in various career discussions, volunteer at community projects and prepare for their exit back into their communities and home life.
The Therapeutic Care Programme runs as a golden thread through the 3 month programme, comprising various modalities aimed at building personal mastery and to reduce stress and deep-seated trauma experienced by most of the young people who join the programme.
Furthermore, in keeping with the holistic developmental approach, the CA acknowledges the importance and positive impact of healthy family relations on building healthy and stable communities. As the participants come from families who are not immune to all the influences that arise within the family ecosystem, the programme includes three Family Workshops per course, aimed at facilitating family resilience and more effective communication within the family.
The 3-month program culminates in the Graduation Ceremony when parents, families, friends and invited dignitaries attend the certification and awards ceremony at a gala event where students showcase their dancing, acting and singing talents, as well as the crafts that they have learnt. A prestigious drill squad wows the audience with precision drilling maneuvers.
W.C. Provincial Department of Community Safety provides annual funding for the programme, as part of this department’s Youth Development Programme.
